Under the existing Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986 any person could pay a small fee to access the details about a motor vehicle, its owner and their address from the publicly available register. There have been concerns about misuse of the information available from the Register. It has been used for direct marketing purposes and criminal purposes. Accordingly the Government has decided to tighten up access to the Register. From 1 April 2011, access to personal details held on the Register will be significantly restricted. Access to personal information about a person registered or previously registered in respect of a motor vehicle will generally speaking only be available to the Police, customs officials, territorial authorities and similar bodies. Beyond that, people will need to make an Official Information request or gain a Special Authority in order to access the register. Anyone can request that their personal information be withheld from those who hold Special Authority to access the register. If you wish to do this, you can follow the below link: |
